Floor tiles are conventionally made from ceramic material. Ceramic tiles can be painted and glazed. Ceramic floor tiles are normally set into mortar consisting of sand, cement and sometimes a latex additive for extra bonding. The spaces between the tiles are these days filled with sanded or unsanded floor grout (e.g. Laticrate), but conventionally mortar was used.

In recent time, demand for ceramic glazed tiles is replaced by polished porcelain tiles (popularly known as “vitrified tiles” in India). Ceramic glazed tiles typically have a glazed upper surface and when that becomes scratched the floor looks worn, whereas the same amount of wear on Vitrified tiles won't show, or will be less noticeable. This is the reason for the boom of vitrified tiles manufacturing in Morbi.

[Tip: Ceramic floor tiles for use in wet areas can be made more slip resistant by using miniature tiles so the grout lines act as grooves or by imprinting a curve pattern onto the face of the tile.]
